I went to see SUPERGIRL tonight, and I’m so glad I don’t solely follow critics’ advice, because I will tell you, I don’t see what some of the other writers see.
First of all, you need to go into this like reading a comic book: this is a story that is a part of a larger universe, but it doesn’t mean that the film has to change something huge in the DCU. She’s having an adventure, and afterwards, the world moves on. You get all of Kara Zor-El’s story in a digestible manner, and I really enjoyed it.
This is directed by Craig Gillespie. He has directed a few movies that I enjoy such as FRIGHT NIGHT, CRUELLA, and I, TONYA. The variety lets me know that he hasn’t made only one genre of movie (and no typecasting at least not yet).
I’m fully on board with Milly Alcock as Supergirl. I haven’t seen her in HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, so I am limited on her acting career. That being said, she does “drunk girl from the early 90s” well and switches gears to hero seamlessly. She is also a nice contrast to this Superman, and I’m excited to see where her character goes next.
Lobo is played by another GAME OF THRONES alum: Jason Momoa. This is the role that he is born to play. Hunting bounties, being rude, and smoking cigars seem like another Tuesday for Momoa. It wouldn’t surprise me if he dressed like this on the regular at home. Lastly, Eve Ridley plays Ruthye. She suits the character well and plays off Alcock positively.
As for the movie, the acting, set design, world design, creatures, and all of the effects that are both CG and practical work together.
I have one gripe, and this isn’t a spoiler, but I didn’t like the villain. He is missing something that I can’t put my finger on.
While walking through the parking lot, the friend that I went to see this with made a comment that maybe SUPERGIRL should’ve been the introduction to the DCU. That’s something to think about. Either way, I highly recommend getting out there and giving this a shot. Honest word-of-mouth is what this deserves.
Have you seen it and want to talk about it? Let’s get into it!
