When a drifter haunted by guilt becomes the vessel for an ancient, vengeful spirit, Christmas takes a deadly detour. For 24 nights leading up to Christmas, Billy is forced to don a Santa suit and punish those the spirit deems “naughty”. – synopsis via Cineverse

SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT is written and directed by Mike P. Nelson, and his other works include WRONG TURN (2021) and V/H/S/85 (2023). It comes from the classic slasher series and is the second reboot of the franchise.

Now, in all honesty, I haven’t seen any of the previous movies, so I can’t say if this is anything like the original. That being said, there are a couple of things that I enjoyed here, such as the voice guiding him and the smooth transitions from day to day. It was a good way to move things forward, and using an old, formal-looking font was a nice touch.

VIDEO QUALITY 4

The video is a 2160p HEVC presentation. It doesn’t have any HDR applied to the video, but the video is solid. It has a “vintage” tone in the images that makes the overall color appear washed out. Reds, of course, are made to pop on the screen, whether it’s blood, the Santa suit, or even, at times, lipstick. Skin tones are on the warmer side, but that could also be from the tone.

AUDIO QUALITY 4

The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. There isn’t much to say about the mix because it is somewhat calm. There are moments of intensity when someone makes the naughty list (I couldn’t help myself). The narration uses the surround channels to give the inside voice sound. The effects are good, and things like gunfire is startling with effective LFEs. Dialogue is at a proper level, and that includes the inside voice.

THE FINAL WORD 3.5

I really enjoyed this movie. It’s entertaining with plenty of people losing their cool and others meeting their untimely deaths. As for the release itself, it is bare-bones with only the one bonus feature, a single audio track, and a single subtitle. The audio and video are both worry-free, with the video having a strong presence, and the audio is on the same level. I will say that the lack of HDR is definitely worth checking out.
