Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures across land, sea, and air within that tropical biosphere hold, in their DNA, the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind. – via Universal Pictures
JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH is directed by Gareth Edwards and written by David Koepp. Edwards previously directed MONSTERS, GODZILLA, and STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE. Koepp wrote JURASSIC PARK and THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK.
I’m surprised Edwards wasn’t involved in earlier installments, as he excels at showcasing scale. His films demonstrate this skill, making him an ideal choice to direct dinosaurs.
The movie returns to basics, aiming to start something new, although it could stand alone in the franchise. There’s even a first dinosaur reveal scene, but it lacks the originality of the first film.
I do have some qualms about the VFX. There are a few scenes on Duncan’s boat that clearly show this was filmed on a soundstage, with the green screen standing out in a not-so-best way. This, along with some of the other effects, looks out of place in a film with this budget.
Also worth mentioning is that there are a lot of references and homages to the franchise as well as other Spielberg properties. One glaring example is that the tagging scene on Duncan’s boat is very much like JAWS, and attaching the barrels to the shark’s dorsal fin.

VIDEO QUALITY 5/5
The video is a 2160p HEVC with Dolby Vision presentation and has a solid transfer. The film was shot on 35mm film, and this gives the transfer a beautiful grain. It is subtle and is just the right amount.
Visually, the overall tone of the movie is on the darker side. Where some scenes seem like they would have a much brighter screen but even in sunlight, this brightness is toned down. The Dolby Vision does make the colors bolder, but it looks more like a darker HDR. This level is where Edwards likes his films to be. Details are strong in everything, like dinosaur skin with small hairs over their bodies. The textures are also sharp. The skin tones are natural and warm.

AUDIO QUALITY 5/5
The audio is a Dolby Atmos mix that defaults to a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mix depending on your equipment. This track is immersive. There are sounds coming in from the distance to show the vastness of the scenes. The score is lively with only light deviations from John Williams’ score. Gunshots have a strong presence, and especially the “anti-dino” weapons created for the movie. LFEs are thunderous and deep. There are a lot of scenes that take full advantage of the Atmos mix with objects sweeping across the sound field. The dialogue is clear and prioritized.

THE FINAL WORD 4.5/5
JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH does entertain, but there really isn’t much that the franchise could’ve done here that would be groundbreaking. I enjoyed the creature designs and characters. I do wonder if there will be a sequel to this, but we will see.
The video is incredible and don’t mind the darker tone. The trade-off is excellent color-grading. The audio is also top-notch. There are some fun extras included, and good film information. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I say it is worth picking up. If you have seen the movie and want to add it to your collection, I highly recommend doing it.
