FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS – My First Impressions

Imagine being a kid in 1961, walking up to a newsstand and seeing the iconic cover for The Fantastic Four on the spinner rack, picking it up, and learning about Marvel’s first family.  This film is very much like one where the page transcends to the screen, representing what filmmakers have been striving for since 2005.  It embraces the futuristic ’60s sci-fi that has only been in our imaginations.

The team is made up of Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (Richards), Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm / Human Torch, Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal / Silver Surfer, and Ralph Ineson as Galactus. This is the perfect cast of up-and-comers who felt like a real family.  That is due to strong acting, writing, and the people who get little praise, the folks in charge of casting.

The direction by Matt Shakman and the writing by Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, and Jeff Kaplan complement each other well.  Let’s also make sure to mention the incredible music by the now legendary (if only in my mind) Michael Giacchino.  It just hits perfectly on the film beats.

One thing that I am wondering is if he had anything to do with a few of the scenes.  There are a few moments that reminded me of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL, and maybe he had some input on the visuals in the scene.

It is very hard to explain without spoiling anything, but when I review the 4k release, I’ll get into it then.

If you can’t tell, I love the movie.  It easily breaks my top five MCU movies and is what I have been looking for from a Fantastic Four movie.   It is getting a lot of positive feedback, and this shows that the MCU isn’t done yet.  I highly recommend getting out there and seeing it in theaters.  It is an experience.

Marvel’s FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS is in theaters now.
