The boys are back and they’re bigger than ever in the gut-busting, all-new Holy Schnike Edition! Crack-up comedians Chris Farley and David Spade star as two ne’er-do-well traveling salesmen who hit the road in order to save the family business in this “infectiously funny”*, larger-than-life movie. Co-starring Rob Lowe, Bo Derek, Dan Akroyd and Brian Dennehy. – synopsis via Paramount Pictures.
TOMMY BOY is directed by Peter Segal who did 50 FIRST DATES, and GRUDGE MATCH. He has done a few other Adam Sandler movies but it was hard to follow this film. Just look over the cast list and see one talented actor after another.
There is no way for me to hide it so I’ll just come out and say it: I do love this movie. It is a comedy that is both well-known and loved for its quotable lines and characters. The cast is this perfect storm of talent in what was probably thought to be a throwaway comedy but still has a large following.
Farley and Spade have this incredible chemistry and the jokes hit just right. The pair went on to do a few other projects but I don’t feel that any are on the same level as this movie.

VIDEO QUALITY 4/5
The video is a 2160p HEVC presentation with Dolby Vision. There is a subtle grain that gives it that film aesthetic. There are the occasional shift in the images but overall, the transfer is good. In the opening scene where Tommy is a kid, his face is washed out and the details are not very strong. The colors do the same until we fast-forward to him in college and it is like watching a completely different release. It’s as if the Dolby Vision activates to make the colors more vibrant and the contrast stronger. The primaries are bold and pop on screen. There are some moments where the picture has an uptick in details and you see skin textures and facial imperfections. The skin tones move from warm to washed out in the few image shifts.

AUDIO QUALITY 3.5/5
The audio is a Dolby True HD 5.1 mix. I feel like this is most likely the same mix from the 2017 Blu-ray but that isn’t a bad thing. There aren’t heavy effects like action explosions but what is there does the job. The ambient sound of driving as it deteriorates on the world’s worst sales call is great. The LFEs are subtle but have some presence. The score is robust and conveys the tone of the moment. The dialogue is clear and prioritized.

THE FINAL WORD 4/5
I know, comedy is subjective but I’m going to put this out there and say that this movie is one of the best comedies out there. Sometimes the slapstick is subtle and at other times, it is a slap in the face (there’s a joke to be made here but I’ll let it go).
The video has some issues but nothing overly distracting and the audio gets the job done. This is one rare time that I truly feel it does’t need the object based remix of the audio. Maybe in the factory or when Tommy discovers his office has a fan…
The extras included are worth looking at, especially if you’re a fan or haven’t previously owned the movie on Blu-ray. Overall the release is excellent and worth adding to your collection. Yes, I have a minor gripe with the video but the benefits of getting it in 4k is worth your time.
