Experience the day the world went quiet in this terrifying continuation of the A Quiet Place universe. When Samira (Lupita Nyong’o) returns home to New York City, her simple trip turns into a harrowing nightmare when mysterious creatures that hunt by sound attack. Accompanied by her cat Frodo and an unexpected ally (Joseph Quinn), Samira must embark on a perilous journey through the city that has suddenly gone silent, where the only rule is to stay quiet to stay alive. Djimon Hounsou and Alex Wolff also star in this intensely suspenseful thriller. – Synopsis via Paramount Pictures

A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE is directed by Michael Sarnoski, who is best known for his other film, PIG. This is a prequel to the two existing films in the series, looking at the Death Angel’s invasion from a very different place than from the Abbot family. The film also answers some questions that fans have had about the aliens.

Cast
Lupita Nyong’o as Samira
Joseph Quinn as Eric
Alex Wolff as Reuben
Djimon Hounsou as Henri

VIDEO QUALITY 5/5

The video is a 2160p HEVC presentation with Dolby Vision.  The details are incredible with even the smallest intricacies coming up clearly.  The building dust and rubble on the characters have a flakey, messy look.  The makeup has everyone looking like they’ve been through it.  During the initial invasion, the clouds of dust don’t have blocking or any other issues that typically occur for that matter.  The colors are on the muted side to convey the gloom and hopelessness of the situation.  Before the invasion, the reds and yellows that Samira wears tend to be brighter.  Skin tones begin warmer and become cooler as the film runs on.  This is a perfect transfer.

AUDIO QUALITY 5/5

The audio is a Dolby Atmos mix that defaults to a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mix depending on your setup. The initial hit of the Death Angels hitting the surface has strong effects of explosions and the aftershock of them hitting the ground.  The overhead speakers make the aliens climbing around the buildings feel like they are ramping up the sense of danger.  The Atmos mix creates an immersive experience as the format should.  The dialogue is clear and prioritized.

THE FINAL WORD 4.5/5

A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE is a different kind of entry into the series between the setting and no one knowing how to deal with the invaders.  There are still the tense moments of trying not to make a sound but with a different tone.  Both the audio and video are outstanding.  Having a release as well authored as this is a positive step for the format.  The extras a sold with some very food information on the movie.  The one that explains the larger alien and the lore involved is a good question answered.  Overall, collector’s fans, and completionists will love this one.  I highly recommend it.
