When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings – never use someone else’s deck – they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings. – synopsis via Sony Pictures

TAROT is the directorial debut of Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg. The two worked together previously on a podcast series called CLASSIFIED. The pair also co-wrote the script and based it on a 1992 novel titled Horoscope. This is a horror movie that has a straightforward plot but has a unique variety of creepiness.
Also, it looks as if there is some usage of practical effects mixed in with the CGI.

VIDEO QUALITY 3/5

The video is a 1080p AVC presentation that is a mixed bag. The daytime scenes look good with nice detailing and coloring. Facial details are especially sharp but let’s discuss shadows and night scenes. Typically, I don’t focus on the bitrate but this had some sudden drops from the get-go. The movie is 70% in the dark and there are artifacts. The dark has some crush muddled contrasting but then that will change from scene to scene depending on what’s happening.

AUDIO QUALITY 4/5

The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. It is a competent track in the surround channels when the sudden movement of what’s on the screen. The LFEs hit hard and gave the system some nice oomph. The creature effects are clean and a great addition to the creepiness. Dialogue is clear and prioritized well.

THE BOTTOM LINE 3/5

I know I said that this is a run-of-the-mill movie but it does hold your attention. The creatures that the production created come across as super creepy. One positive that I’d like to make note of is that the cast has natural chemistry like looking in on an actual group of friends. To me, that helps sell me on a movie and adds to the believability.

A piece if advice: If you see something creepy or old in a house, leave it alone. Also, if you already picked it up, put it back. As soon as the door opened to the room the cards were in, I would say “Pass!” And close the door. The video is maybe average but the audio is done nicely. The extras have some good information but I’m wondering if there was not more to add. They are very short. If you’re into horror, you might want to give this one a look.
