From the comedic mind of Tina Fey comes a new twist on the modern classic, MEAN GIRLS. New student Cady Heron is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics,” ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George. However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels, she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis and Damian, she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school. – Synopsis via Paramount Pictures
MEAN GIRLS is directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. It is based on the Broadway musical based on the film that’s based on the book called “Queen Bees and Wannabees.” (This is my TROPIC THUNDER moment).
When I first heard about this movie, I didn’t understand why they would make this when the movie is great the way it is. After I found out there was already a Broadway musical in existence, it all came together.
In the film, the actors have been cast perfectly. Angourie Rice might be a better Cady than Lindsey Lohan because she has more of a wholesome quality that was missing from the original movie. Unfortunately, this is a case where real life affected the characters in Lohan’s case. Rice is very talented and it’s worth checking out some of her previous works such as MARE OF EAST-SIDE and THE NICE GUYS.
Moving on, Reneé Rapp is Regina George. She feels more vicious towards everyone. She was good on the series THE SEX LIVES OF COLLEGE GIRLS but this role let her show off her singing abilities as well as her acting.

VIDEO QUALITY 4.5/5
The video is an 2160p HEVC presentation that looks gorgeous. The coloring is on the warmer side and the colors pop. The Dolby Vision helps with the color’s brilliance and ramps up the detail. In a few scenes, you can spot the debris from dust and clothing in the air. The detail in the clothing texture is sharp. There is a light grain on the images that gives it that film appearance. There are a few moments that change the aspect ratio for the good of the film so don’t be surprised when it happens.
Note: The screen captures were taken from the 4k trailer due to no bundled Blu-ray included.

AUDIO QUALITY 5/5
The audio is a Dolby Atmos mix or a Dolby True HD 7.1 mix depending on your setup. There is no shortage of the mix using the overhead speakers because the music is made to fill the sound field. The dance at the end utilizes the track well. The dialogue as well as the dinging voices are clear, natural, and mixed properly. The LFEs feel solid and clean.

THE BOTTOM LINE 4/5
I now understand completely why this movie was made: this is something that fans of the original and the masses should see because it adds something to the original idea. The story is made to be turned into a musical and it has been done perfectly. As for the 4k release, both the audio and video are excellent. The bus features are also going to excite fans of the film. Overall, I highly recommend picking this up if you enjoy this version or like the original. It is worth your time.
